If you’re thinking about having a professional video made for your business, there’s a good chance you’ve wondered what it’s going to cost.
The problem is that asking about professional video production cost is a little like asking how much it costs to build a website. Before anyone can give you a useful answer, they need to know what you’re trying to make.
A few short Reels recorded in a studio are one type of project. A commercial with a green screen, multiple scenes, graphics, music, and extensive editing is another.
Knowing what goes into the production can help you understand where the cost comes from and, more importantly, what you actually need.
Start With the Video You Want to Make
Before asking for a price, explain what you’re trying to create.
Are you recording a 30-second commercial? A series of social media videos? An interview? A customer testimonial? A podcast?
You don’t need to know all the technical details. That’s what the production team is there for.
Something as simple as, “I’d like to record five short videos answering questions my customers ask,” gives us a much better starting point than simply asking, “How much is a video?”
From there, we can figure out the setup.
Studio Time Is Only One Part of the Project
When you rent a professional video studio, you’re not simply paying for a room with a camera in it.
Depending on the production, you may need studio lighting, microphones, multiple cameras, a teleprompter, a green screen, different backgrounds, or someone operating the equipment.
A one-person Reel may have a fairly simple setup.
An interview between two people could require multiple microphones and camera angles. A green screen production needs to be lit and framed correctly so the background can be replaced during editing.
The setup depends on what you want the finished video to look like.
Recording More at Once Can Make Sense
If you’re already coming into a studio, think about what else you could record while you’re there.
Maybe you originally planned to record one company introduction. Could you also answer three common customer questions? Record a short Reel? Talk about one of your services?
You don’t have to cram as much as possible into every session, but arriving with several prepared topics can give you more content from the time you’ve already set aside.
For businesses that publish regularly, this can be much easier than scheduling a new recording every time they need another video.
Editing Can Be Simple or Very Involved
Editing isn’t the same for every project either. Sometimes a video only needs clean cuts, basic audio adjustments, and a logo.
Another project may need captions, music, color correction, multiple camera angles, photographs, custom graphics, animated titles, background replacement, or visual effects.
That additional work happens after you’ve left the studio.
This is why two videos that took the same amount of time to record can have very different production costs.
Branding Is Something to Think About Too
If you’re planning to produce videos regularly, you may want them to have a consistent look.
That could include your logo, brand colors, lower thirds with names and titles, animated intros and outros, or other graphics that can be reused from one video to the next.
Creating those elements may add to the initial project, but once they’re built, they can become part of future productions.
You don’t have to redesign the look of every video from scratch.
Green Screen Requires Post-Production
Recording with a green screen gives you plenty of creative options, but the green background isn’t the finished product.
During editing, that green area needs to be removed and replaced with whatever belongs behind the person on camera. That might be a branded design, an office environment, photos, video, graphics, or another custom background.
If you’re considering green screen production, think about the finished look rather than just the recording itself.
Knowing what you want behind you helps determine how the project should be planned and edited.
Tell the Studio Where You’ll Use the Video
This is an easy detail to overlook.
If you’re making videos for Instagram Reels, tell us.
If the video is going on your website, tell us.
If you need a horizontal version for YouTube and shorter vertical clips for social media, tell us that too.
The final format, number of versions, and amount of editing can all affect the scope of the project.
It’s much easier to plan those things before recording than to try to rebuild a video for another platform afterward.
